Well paid jobs in Korea
The Korean people have had a long, hard history, but in the past fifty years have made tremendous advances. Democratic values and capitalism have given Koreans a chance to step out of the shadows of other Asian powers. Through the diligence and hard work of the people, South Korea’s economy came to be known as one of the four ‘Asian Tigers’.
The competitive drive that has resulted from the fortitude of the Korean people has produced an educational system that relies heavily on strict rules, memory and standardised testing. This system has shaped some of the world’s best thinkers in technology and manufacturing, but it has produced few fluent English speakers.
South Korea is becoming more internationalised and attracts many foreign nationals for educational and business purposes. Its modern cities and major technological advancement contrast sharply with its green mountainous landscape and its old world atmosphere.
The thing that really makes South Korea special is the people. Koreans can be shy at first, but as you get to know them you’ll generally find them to be generous, warm-hearted and loyal. In other words they make great friends! Time invested in getting to know Korean co-workers will be repaid tenfold as they will likely volunteer to help you get settled and go out of their way to help you.
The old and the new exist comfortably side-by-side. Whether you are interested in the modern or the ancient there are a thousand reasons to visit South Korea.
With a TEFLstop Introductory Certificate in TEFL a world of opportunity is open to you!
TEFLstop offers you the chance of a well-paid job in one of the many state (public) or private language schools, specialty academies or universities. There are some major advantages of working in Korea: good salaries; low income tax; low cost of living and the satisfaction of teaching students who are enthusiastic about learning English.
MONEY
In Korea making and saving money is easy. Income tax is very low and so is the cost of living. You can easily save half your income and still live well. It provides the chance for novice teachers to pay off student loans while gaining practical teaching experience.
TRAVEL
Korea is perfectly located as a base for travel throughout Asia, from China and Japan to Southeast Asia, India and even Australia. Dotted with mountains and hills, Korea is home to magnificent autumn views and misty, serene mornings, with many national parks and trails, and for those who prefer the city, fantastic shopping of all kinds.
Many teachers use South Korea as their ‘base camp’ from which they make as many excursions as possible to other places in Asia. Many public holidays means you could realistically visit China or Japan in less than an hour’s flight (or a ferry is a cheaper option, if you have time) over a long weekend. Cheap airfares and relatively short flying times compared to living expenses and salary makes travel a serious benefit for those teaching in South Korea.
STATE (PUBLIC) SCHOOLS
Most state schools seek new teachers in December and January (for the March term) and in June and July (for the September term). Working conditions are similar to those in private schools.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Most of these positions are in the capital city, Seoul, and its suburbs, the nearby satellite cities of Bucheon, Bundang, Ilsan, Pyeongchon, Suwon and Uijeongbu. These cities are all very close to Seoul and can be reached easily by subway or city bus.
UNIVERSITIES & SPECIALITY ACADEMIES
These jobs are available throughout the year, with varying work conditions. Speciality academies are typically concentrated in and around Seoul, and university positions can be had across the entire country.
THE PLACEMENT TEAM
Our partner in Korea has placed over 1,000 teachers to date, and is affiliated with the Gyeonggi Province Board of Education, placing many of their foreign staff. In addition most of the staff have taught EFL so they know what it’s like to be in the classroom. They all speak English and have travelled abroad.
FULL SUPPORT
Our partner’s responsibility to you continues after you have started your job. A fundamental part of the service is to provide you with information, advice and assistance before you begin work, and then for the duration of your contract, and to act as a cultural liaison between you and your employer so that you know what to expect from each other, both in and out of the workplace.
