Frequently Used Terms Explained

TEFL

Teaching English as a Foreign Language refers mainly to teaching English to foreign learners overseas.
This is a widely used term which can be seen in the acronym IATEFL – the International Association for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language of which we are members.

TESL

Teaching English as a Second Language refers mainly to teaching English in your home country to those whose first language is not English. It is also sometimes used in the USA for what we refer to as TEFL.

TESOL

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is the umbrella term for all forms of teaching English to non-native speakers whether at home or overseas. The same acronym is used for the American world movement TESOL – Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages.
